Caritas Hungary's September Newsletter
Back-to-school preparations, health screenings, community gatherings, and international collaboration—it has been a busy few weeks for us. We helped children start the school year with greater ease, our volunteer doctors examined nearly two hundred people, we met with colleagues from Hungary and abroad, and we reflected together on how we can do even more for others.

More Than Two Thousand Children Started the School Year with Joy
Our “Make Back-to-School a Joy!” campaign has come to a close, and once again, many people joined us in easing the back-to-school burden for families in need. Thanks to this shared effort, more than two thousand children received school supplies and other support in Hungary and Hungarian communities across the border.
Thank you to everyone who contributed with a donation! We also continue to support more than two hundred students throughout the school year, providing personalized academic assistance through our Stepping Stone program.

Our Medical Mission Examined Nearly Two Hundred People in Sajószentpéter, Hungary
Our Medical Mission team recently spent two days in Sajószentpéter, where our volunteer doctors examined nearly two hundred children and adults. Visitors had access to pediatric orthopedic and ophthalmological examinations, as well as gynecological cancer screenings. The screenings also helped identify several previously undiagnosed cases of high blood pressure and diabetes.
Once again, our experience showed just how important it is to bring medical care closer to people who have difficulty accessing regular checkups—not only abroad, but right here in Hungary as well. After more than nine years on the road, our Medical Mission continues its vital work.

Caritas Specialists from Six Countries Met in Budapest
How can we reach donors more effectively? What can we learn from one another, and which best practices are worth taking home? Representatives of Caritas organizations from six countries explored these questions during a four-day workshop in Budapest as part of the ACTS project.
Alongside our collaborative sessions, we visited Székesfehérvár, where our guests learned about the corporate fundraising practices of the local Diocesan Caritas and got a glimpse into daily life at St. Christopher House. We came away with valuable insights and fresh ideas, and our shared journey of learning and innovation continues.

Meetings, Games, and Community Spirit at Catholic Social Days
Kossuth Square in Kaposvár came alive for three days, and we were delighted to take part once again in Catholic Social Days. The Kaposvár Diocesan Caritas tent offered crafts and family games, the St. Anna House team welcomed older visitors with engaging activities, and thanks to the Eger Archdiocesan Caritas, attendees could even try their hand at an escape room.
On Saturday, staff from the Budapest RÉV Addiction Support Service joined us, using interactive games to demonstrate how addiction can develop and why prevention matters. It was wonderful to meet, talk, and play together—and to experience once again the incredible power of community.

Stories from Uganda at Café Francesco
What is it like to meet face-to-face with the people we serve in a distant country? What will a new school mean for the children of Lokiteded, Uganda? At the end of September, we shared these stories at Café Francesco.
Richárd Zagyva, National Director of Caritas Hungary, and International Coordinator Kata Szentkirályi-Tóth spoke about their experiences in Uganda, the plans to build a new school in Lokiteded, and what they learned through our international work. If you missed the event—or would simply like to hear the conversation again—the full recording is now available on YouTube.

Nine Years in Photos: Remembering Dr. László Vojcek
Nine years, nearly sixteen thousand people examined, and thirty-four communities across the border—our Medical Mission has come a long way. At our anniversary event in Budapest, we not only looked back on what has been accomplished, but also honored the mission’s founder, Dr. László Vojcek, who passed away this year, with a memorial photo exhibition.
The exhibition was opened and blessed by Antal Spányi, Bishop of Székesfehérvár, while National Director Richárd Zagyva reflected on one of Professor Vojcek’s greatest legacies: the power of personal presence. The work he began continues, with Dr. Katalin Gombos now taking over the professional leadership of the Medical Mission.
